A Lesson Learnt

The novel that I studied in Form 3 is The Elephant Man by Tim Vicary. One of the lessons I have learnt from the novel is we should be kind to others.

From the novel, we can see that Joseph Merrick is ill-treated at first. Many people dislike him because his face looks like an elephant. He has big feet and a proper hand that is bigger than a normal sized hand. Despite his deformity, Dr Treves is kind enough to help him at all mean.

First and foremost, Dr Treves brings him to the hospital in a cab so that he can help him. However, due to Merrick is not sick, no hospital would take him in. So, Dr Treves immediately writes a letter to the Hospital Chairman, Mr Carr Gomm telling him about Merrick. Mr Carr Gomm then writes to the editor of The Times and they manage to raise some money for Merrick to stay in the hospital. It is here that Dr Treves looks after Merrick well and gives him a decent home and a more meaningful life.

Besides, Dr Treves entends his kindness by introducing some lady friends to Merrick and he makes a lot of friends too! Many important people including the Queen comes to talk to him. Although Dr Treves is not able to cure Merrick from whatever disease or deformity, he gives him a home in the hospital.

In addition, Dr Treves is kind enough to arrange a visit to the theatre for Merrick. As requested, Dr Treves even arranges Merrick to stay for a few days in a house at the countryside. However, he passes on when he sleeps on his back that night.

As a colusion, due to Dr Treves’ kindness, Merrick lives a happy life ever since. He is happy as he is treated equally. He even has made many sincere friends who are willing to talk to him.
