How to be Safe on the Road

How to be Safe on the Road

By Timothy Chan

We always hear the saying ‘It is better to be safe than sorry’. This is especially true when it comes to safety on the road. There are a few things that we must be alert to in order to be safe on the road.

First and foremost, pedestrians should always make good use of the pedestrian bridges whenever they are available. Alternatively, pedestrians can also use zebra crossing to cross the busy roads safely. This is because traffic will come to a standstill to allow pedestrians to walk safely across the road. When walking along the road, bear in mind always walk against traffic flow, not towards.

Besides, all road users must obey traffic lights to prevent accidents from happening. As the saying goes, “Prevention is better than cure”. Motorists and drivers have to prepare to stop their vehicles when the traffic lights turn amber. Never ever use mobile phones or any electronic gadgets such as ipad whenever you are using the road. This is to safeguard ourselves and also other road users.

Last but not least, pedestrians ought to wear light-coloured clothing at night. This is because the visibility is very low after sunset. To prevent unnecessary accidents, road users can also put on their reflective gears at night to make it easier for other road users to see them.

In a nutshell, if road users are aware of these safety precautions and put them into practice, accidents on the road definitely can be reduced.
