The novel that I studies in Form 3 is The Elephant Man by Tim Vacary. An important theme in the story is kindness. In the beginning of the novel, Merrick is ill-treated by Silcock. Then, his fate change drastically when he meets a kind-hearted doctor named Dr Treves. Dr Treves does numerous kind deeds for Merrick in order for him to live a new life. First and foremost, Dr Treves is kind enough to take Merrick back to the hospital so that he could look at Merrick more carefully. Besides, Dr Treves spoke to the chairman of the hospital, Mr Carr Gomm about Merrick. After advertising in the press, Mr Carr Gomm manages to gather some money and is able to arrange Merrick to stay in the hospital. In addition, Dr Treves becomes Merrick’s guardian and his first ever true friend. He even introduces friends to Merrick. Merrick may have been unfortunate to be born so ugly but he is definitely a fortunate one to find kindness everywhere towards the end of his life. As a conclusion, this is a story that full of of kindness and hence, kindness is the main theme of the story.
